When I received this gift from Eric and Liz Stohlberg back in June, my husband, Rob, who is a sometimes collector of antiques, was Big-Eyed, saying ".. you can't paint THAT!!"...then he Took me to School about the history of the Showers Brothers in Bloomington, which I kinda knew about, but apparently, didn't know the half of it! Fortunately for my intentions, there was a little staining of some of the fine veneer on the sides from moisture damage, which I did my best to restore, but oh well, it just wouldn't come out...

These are hanging cards, created from vintage book covers, technically called bookboards, discarded from the bookbinding department at the Main Library on campus, where I worked as a temp for a season. I couldn't bear to throw them out! They are so cool.. Collages are made from antique sheet music from the thirties and forties! Cards are reversible, and some have the original pocket for the old check out card. Cards can be custom designed to say what you like for loved ones and occasions.

To Each His Own
Custom Gift Box~ Title Song from the Paramount Pictures 1946 release, starring Olivia de Havilland, whose efforts won her the first of two academy awards. "What good is a song if the words just don't belong, and a dream must be a dream for two..." the little box goes on to implore "..two lips must insist on two more to be kissed or they'll never know what love can do..." On the back, a grand embrace, as de Havilland and Lund look alternately inspired and serious at the uncertain future: She, wide-eyed in eyelet lace, He, arms about her assuringly in a World War I army uniform.

Custom Gift Box ~ This birthday box is a regular shirt box coated with antique sheet music, of which I have a small supply. Always looking for it, though, so don't throw any away! The music on the box is entitled "Dream Train" and the card sheath, "Love Walked In". Photo corners inside to insert your own message..
Our Lady Of Bermont
Custom Gift Box made for the former President of the Lithuanian Free Market Institute, Elena Leontjeva, whom I traveled with in France while doing some research. This is a photo of the actual sculpture which adorned the Chapel of Bermont where Joan of Arc worshiped as a child. The Lady here depicted was moved to the Basilica constructed in the early twentieth century at Domremy, the tiny village where Joan grew up. Bermont chapel had fallen into disrepair, exposing the interior to the elements. The chapel has been recently restored, and will be ready for this year's 600th anniversary of the saint's birth. The chapel of Bermont rests in the forest on a ridge overlooking the village, and Joan went there as often as she could.

Roosterart
Aha! ..Here it is. This is one of Susan Downs' marvelous rooster paintings. These birds are her own, and they all have personalities to rival that of most housepets! These two are duking it out to see who gets to rule the roost..Blue Studio opened downtown on Friday, September 23rd with a full show of Susan's very impressive barnyard body of work, along with a few barnyard friends: if you stopped by, you remember seeing some of her chickens in a little coop out on the sidewalk! This exhibit will remain until the next one, but Susan works here in the studio, you can often see her up in the window from the street, painting in the fabulous light that pours in through the entire east wall...you can visit Susan's website at www.susandownsgallery.com, and don't forget the best way to see the art is to visit..!

After much ado, Blue Studio has arrived at its new location and is installed, except for the windows, which will be fun, as there are two ten by twelve foot windows across the eastern wall of the space! Let the sunshine, indeed.
Now located at 116.5 S. College, just off the square, and upstairs, to the left of the Chocolate Emporium, Blue is already doing business with the Scrivener's bench, making custom menus, invitations and programs for two lovely weddings.
The Studio is open and featuring the work of oil painter Susan Downs and her rooster art, as well as the continued presence of Kim Ransdell's ingenious and inspiring Letterpress Prints.

Blue Limbo
Blue Studio is currently in the process of finding a new location in downtown Bloomington. This will afford the Studio an opportunity to take part in the benefits of being located near the square, and potentially, to participate in gallery walk. Many ideas abound regarding accessible artistic services and classes, as well as exciting projects and displays..
